Youth Environmental Stewardship Camp
TSAG’s first annual Youth Environmental Stewardship Camp was held August 8th-15th, 2009 for First Nations youth, grades 9-12 at the Centre for Outdoor Education (COE). The Camp was a great success and will be held again in the summer of 2010.
The camp focused on Environmental Stewardship and Conservation leadership skills, including topics such as Water, Fish Habitat Conservation and Protection, and Species at Risk. The primary goal of the camp was to encourage youth to continue in Science and Math Post-Secondary education routes by identifying related careers at the camp. Careers discussed included Environmental Management, Fisheries Biologist, Environmental Technician, Engineer, Engineering Design and Drafting Technologist, GIS analyst, Water Plant Operator, Environmental Health Officer, Community Health Representative, Housing Initiatives Manager, and Information Technologist. Speakers came in the evening to present on the various education and career paths. Day activities included canyoneering, white water rafting, rock climbing, touring the Columbia Ice fields and the Bighorn Water Treatment Plant.
TSAG would like to thank Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Health Canada, and the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) for their support and financial contribution for the camp. TSAG would also like to thank all of the speakers that came out to the camp, including Maskwacis Health Services and Fisheries and Oceans Canada for sending representatives. Special thanks to Wacey Rabbit for coming out to speak. Thank you to the Bighorn First Nation for the tour of their Water Treatment Plant facilities. Special thanks to Elder Charlie Abraham from Bighorn First Nation for his prayers and for speaking at the camp and to Seona Abraham for supporting and promoting the camp.
